Long Service. The retirement of Mr. William Shenton, driver
at Ardsley, on November 4, at the age of 65, reveals a very interesting record
of continuous family service on the railway : John Shenton (grand- father)
entered service of South Yorks Rly. Co. at Mexborough in 1851 ; William Shenton
(father) entered service of Manchester, Sheffield and Lincoln Rly. Co. at Mexborough in 1870
and was accidentally killed in a railway accident in 1913; William Shenton
entered service of Manchester, Sheffield and Lincoln Rly. Co. at Walton in 1896
and after serving at various places was appointed driver at Wakefield in 1910
and transferred to Ardsley in 1934. Mr.
John Shenton’s second son, Richard, also took up a railway career, joining the
Manchester, Sheffield and Lincoln Rly. Co. about 1870, retiring in 1922. He had
three sons, all of whom are still in L.N.E.R. service, William and John as
drivers, at Woodford and Grimsby respectively, and Harry as Running Foreman at
Cambridge.
